For Fourth Straight Year, Super Bowl Features Team from a Legal Marijuana State - TheJointBlog
As the National Football League (NFL) continues its hard-line stance on marijuana – including punishing players for using it for medical purposes – it’s worth noting that this year’s Super Bowl will feature a team from a state where marijuana is legal for all purposes. This is the fourth straight year this has been the case.
This year’s Super Bowl – Super Bowl LI – features the Atlanta Falcons against the New England Patriots. The Patriots are from Massachusetts, a state where any of its players can legally possess, use, grow and soon purchase marijuana for medical or recreational purposes.
Last year’s Super Bowl featured the Denver Broncos versus the Carolina Panthers. As everyone knows, cannabis is legal in Colorado which was the first to do so in 2012.
In 2015 – Super Bowl XLIX- the Patriots squared off against the Seattle Seahawks. Although cannabis wasn’t legal in Massachusetts at that point, it was in Seattle (and had been for a couple years).
And of course 2014’s Super Bowl XLVIII was dubbed by many as the Cannabis Bowl, as both teams – the Denver Broncos and Seattle Seahawks – are from states that had legalized cannabis in 2012.
