Supervisors Could Approve Cannabis Business Process
The Contra Costa Board of Supervisors is set to decide Tuesday whether to approve a selection process for a set number of commercial cannabis permits for unincorporated areas of the county. Contra Costa County's cannabis zoning ordinance allows for four storefront retailers, 10 commercial operations and two cannabis manufacturing businesses in agricultural zoning districts throughout the county. The proposed selection process being considered Tuesday requires applicants to submit letters of intent to apply for a commercial cannabis activity land use permit. County officials would then decide which applicants would move forward in the process. This process would favor applicants with a "locally-owned business" element. The process timeline, as presented to the supervisors, calls for letters of intent to be submitted by April 4. Some of those applicants would be invited to submit formal proposals for cannabis businesses by June 27. County staff would then evaluate proposals, and rank and score them. Oral interviews of applicants, and visits to proposed business sites, would follow. The Board of Supervisors would then consider county staff recommendations and determine which respondents to invite to apply for land use permits. That, a staff report says, could happen by October. Tuesday's Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors meeting begins at 9:30 a.m. in the first-floor supervisors' meeting room at 651 Pine St. in downtown Martinez.
